SUMMER SKIN CARE TIPS

SUMMER SKINCARE TIPS

Mumbai is located along the coast and with high humidity, summers take a toll on our skin and hair every year. The scorching heat, pollution wipes off the natural glow and may invite a plethora of fungal and bacterial infections. Simple skincare tips help you evade these infections, keeping your skin healthy & glowing.

How Does Summer Affect Your Skin and hair?

With soaring temperatures and increased humidity in the surrounding, our skin’s sebaceous glands (natural oil-producing glands) start producing extra secretions (sebum).

These natural oils get stuck on the surface of the skin  stickiness of skin cells, greasiness, and blocked pores which provide a favorable environment for the growth of microorganisms in these pores  acne(pimples) breakouts.

These Acne breakouts are one of the most common problems that occur in warm/hot humid climates, in teenagers as well as in adults.

Exposure to harmful UV rays results in rising in melanin production (skin pigment which gives color to the skin) in order to protect our skin from sun damage. Excess melanin deposition darker, tanned skin.

Other problems can include itchy skin, prickly heat, sunburn, and rash due to sensitivity of the sun

Common infections seen during summers are fungal (ringworm) bacterial (impetigo, prickly heat), dandruff, etc.

To avoid all these issues, and to keep your skin glowing every day, follow these summer skincare tips –

Replace your skincare routine just like your wardrobe.

If you are not wearing a winter jacket in summer, why should your skin?

Look for a foaming cleanser instead of a creamy cleanser, and lightweight water-based moisturiser

Have bath twice daily

Wear loose-fitting cotton clothes and undergarments daily

Always keep your skin routine handy while traveling

Wear sunscreen every day, around the year.

Don’t leave home without applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen of appropriate SPF as per your dermatologist’s advise

Apply sunscreen adequately to cover all sun-exposed areas(face, neck, ears, hands, chest, feet)

Make it a habit to reapply it every couple of hours when you are outdoors for long hours

Set an alarm on your phone for reapplication

Keep makeup to a minimum and occasionally only

Avoid using foundation creams.

Look for a lightweight foundation and oil-free primer.

Always check the label “NON-COMEDOGENIC” to keep acne breakouts at bay.

Do not forget to remove the makeup before going to bed.

Use micellar water for removing makeup followed by gentle facewash

Apply night cream as per your dermatologist’s advise

Moisturize your skin and hydrate your body.

Moisturization in summer is as important as in winter.

The evaporation rate of water from the skin is higher in a hot climate, leading to dryness and flaky skin

Use water, gel-based, and oil-free moisturizer.

Drink 3-4 liters of water and clear liquids daily to help replenish your body’s water reserves. This will also help you to maintain your body’s thermoregulation.

Stay in the shade.

Avoid midday sunlight exposure

Always wear a wide-brimmed hat, scarfs or umbrella to cover sun-exposed areas like face, hands, feet, etc

Make sure you wear sun-protective cotton clothing.

Wear sunglasses daily.

Following these simple skincare routine tips regularly will help you keep the common skin issues at bay and protect your skin from further damage.
